Penzance Museums
(Penzance, Cornwall, England, UK)
There are several noteworthy museums worth visiting in the Penzance area, although sadly the Pilchards Works Museum in the nearby village of Newlyn has now closed. Amongst the most visiting museums in Penzance, a visit to the Porthcurno Telegraph Museum is a must and should be added to everyone's itinerary.
The Trinity House National Lighthouse Centre along Wharf Road is also one of Penzance's most visited museums and will be able to answer any question that you may ever have about lighthouses. Here are the main museums in the Penzance area of Cornwall.
Penzance Museums: Porthcurno Telegraph Museum - Eastern House, Porthcurno, Cornwall, TR19 6JX, England, UK
Tel: +44 (0)1736 810 966
The award-winning Porthcurno Telegraph Museum is surrounded by spacious landscaped grounds, in the charming village of Porthcurno, part of the St. Levan parish. Close to Penzance, the museum celebrates the village's rich history and includes a range of Victorian artefacts relating to its past telegraph communications technology, together with underground tunnels and secret escape routes. Surprisingly, this small village was one of the world's most prominent communications centres in the 1870s and this fact is celebrated here. Also nearby and worth a visit is the Porthcurno Beach and the cliff-top Minack Theatre.
Penzance museum open: April to October, daily - 10:00 to 17:00; November to March, Sunday, Monday and school holidays - 10:00 to 17:00

Celebrating the history of lighthouses in this part of Cornwall, the Trinity House National Lighthouse Centre was founded in 1990. Home to an enormous collection of memorabilia relating to lighthouses, including equipment used in many prominent locations to keep ships away from the rocky coast, further attractions include an authentic reconstruction of the cramped living space where lighthouse keepers once lived. The museum also features a theatre with regular audio-visual presentations, navigational buoys, various devices used for lighting, and a Norwegian foghorn that you are allowed to sound.
Penzance museum open: mid-March to October, 11:00 to 17:00
